We’ve all heard this verse quoted from the Bible: “Judge not lest you be judged.” While this is a correct quote spoken by Jesus in Matthew 7:1, it is largely taken out of context by people who don’t want to be held accountable for their actions. Or, when they realize the hypocrisy of defending a person who is indefensible, they immediately throw this verse into the conversation and add, “Who am I to judge? We are all sinners!” Again, while this is a correct sentiment, it is taken out of context.

In Matthew 7:15-20, Jesus gives us the tools of discernment: “By their fruits you will know them.” There is a huge difference between judgment and discernment. Judgement is when we shame someone for doing something that we do ourselves: “I can’t believe she lets her kids do that; what an idiot.” Discernment is when observe for the purpose of obtaining insight in order to make a healthy decision: “He lied about where he was; therefore, I cannot trust him to borrow my car.” Discernment keeps us safe. Judgment breeds contempt.
